When a timber door stands over 2.4 metres high and spans 1.2 metres wide per leaf, ordinary construction fails. We engineered this pair with internal expansion rebates and balanced double-faced bracing so the doors remain dead flat year-round.
Most commercial barn doors sold across Melbourne are mass-produced hollow-core doors or thin softwood laminates that begin to twist, bow, or scrape against timber floorboards after their first winter heating cycle. For this residential project, the client required a striking double sliding room divider to connect the main living pavilion to the private wing. The doors needed to deliver substantial acoustic separation when closed, slide effortlessly with feather-light touch, and serve as an architectural timber feature wall when parked open.
Every stile, rail, and lining board is machined on our own shapers and planers. Nothing is flat-packed, nothing is imported, and every timber element is balanced to prevent tension bow.

On single barn doors, a standard diagonal 'Z' brace or 'K' brace works well. But when pairing two oversized doors across an open architectural doorway, asymmetrical bracing creates optical imbalance.
For this project, we designed mirrored chevron braces angled at exactly 32 degrees. When the doors slide together and meet at the center threshold, the braces form an inward-pointing arrow that frames the room entrance. Each brace is machined from 100mm × 25mm solid hardwood, hand-scribed to fit tightly against the outer stiles, and rebated flush with the face so there are no awkward protruding ledges to collect dust.
Melbourne homes experience dramatic humidity fluctuations between damp winter mornings and dry 40°C summer northerlies. If you glue wide solid timber panels across their width, the timber expands, exerts immense lateral pressure, and forces the entire door leaf into an unfixable bow.
Our doors use an engineered floating tongue-and-groove system. Each 85mm vertical timber board is machined with a precision 5mm expansion shoulder and fitted into internal perimeter stile grooves. The boards are free to micro-breathe with seasonal humidity changes while the heavy mortise-and-tenon outer frame keeps the door straight, plumb, and true year after year.
The best timber joinery in the world is ruined if the doors rattle, jump the track, or require heavy muscle to slide. We pair our architectural timber doors with commercial-grade running gear engineered for daily residential ease.
Heavy-gauge carbon steel top track secured directly into structural wall header blocking. Polymer-cushioned stainless steel wheels glide silently without metal-on-metal squeal.
Integrated pneumatic dampers catch the moving door 100mm before the travel stops, gently decelerating each leaf and drawing it smoothly to a closed or open park with zero bounce.
A continuous 12mm channel is routered into the underside of the door bottom rail. The doors glide over a concealed floor pin, keeping them plumb and eliminating ugly floor metal tracks.
Acoustic & Thermal Consideration: Because solid Australian hardwood doors have substantial mass and density, they dramatically outperform standard hollow-core doors in dampening sound transmission between open living zones, TV areas, and bedroom suites.

We laser-measure the doorway opening, check wall plumb across the entire slide travel distance, and confirm solid timber stud blocking inside the lintel wall.
Select Australian hardwood is dressed, cut, and assembled with mortise-and-tenon joints in our Ravenhall factory. Every diagonal brace is hand-scribed to fit flush.
Doors are fine-sanded to 240-grit, edges arrised, and sealed with your choice of natural architectural hardwax oil, clear matte polyurethane, or custom stain.
Our factory craftsmen install the overhead structural track, hang the leaves, calibrate the soft-close stops, and anchor the concealed bottom floor guide.
Every timber door set we manufacture is backed by KJoinery's 10-year structural warranty. Where a new structural timber lintel or header beam is required, our sister company KRenovation provides licensed carpentry and building permits.
Sliding barn doors excel in openings where swinging doors would obstruct walkways, collide with furniture, or waste floor space. Double parting barn doors (like this 2.4m project) are ideal for connecting open-plan living rooms to dining areas, screening off home theaters, or creating dramatic master bedroom suite entries.
No. We do not install surface-mounted floor tracks that collect dirt or create tripping hazards across your timber or tiled floors. Instead, we router a concealed 12mm × 15mm guide channel directly into the bottom edge of the door leaf. A small stainless steel pin is fixed to the floor next to the door jamb, remaining hidden underneath the door through its entire sliding travel.
Solid Australian hardwood doors of this scale weigh between 45kg and 65kg per leaf. They cannot simply be hung into plasterboard with drywall anchors. The overhead track must be anchored directly into solid timber wall studs or a continuous internal structural timber header beam. If your wall does not have existing timber blocking, we install a matching hardwood ledger board or open the plaster to install structural nogging.
We use kiln-dried select-grade Australian timber tested for 10–12% moisture equilibrium. Crucially, the door is built as an engineered perimeter frame with floating internal tongue-and-groove boards that expand and contract independently within perimeter expansion slots. Combined with balanced double-faced chevron cross-bracing, the door resists bowing across seasonal humidity changes.
