This kitchen renovation in Essendon started with a room where nothing was square. Most kitchens are set out against a flat ceiling; this one has a pitch running straight through the middle of the joinery, so the cabinetry was drawn to the angle first and everything else followed it.
It is a long galley. Bench down one side under a window that runs almost the full length of the room, a stone-topped run and cooktop on the other, and a peninsula in Santorini Gold closing the end nearest the living space.
The fronts are Laminex Prime Oak in Absolute Wood Matt. It is a dead-flat matt woodgrain with the texture pressed in register with the grain, so it catches light like timber instead of looking like a print of it. No handles anywhere. Each drawer and door has a slim pull rail set into the joint line.
The benchtops, the splashback panel and the peninsula are Santorini Gold, a warm cream stone with soft gold veining that runs horizontally. It picks up the oak rather than fighting it, which is the whole reason the room reads calm despite two strong materials.
Behind all of it is Blum hardware on every door and drawer. That is the part you cannot see in a photograph and the part you touch every day. Same standard we hold on every one of our custom kitchens.
The bench is level, the floor is level, and the ceiling is not. Every vertical panel that meets it had to be cut to the pitch and scribed on site.
A raked ceiling is the most common reason a kitchen gets built short, with a dust shelf and a plaster bulkhead hiding the gap. We took the other option.
The easy way to handle a raked ceiling is to stop the cabinets at a level height, run a bulkhead above them and never speak of it again. You lose the top third of a wall and the room ends up with a horizontal line fighting a sloped one.
Instead the tall cabinets and the panelling run all the way up and finish on the angle. Every one of those diagonal cuts is a different length, so the run was measured off the actual pitch on site, drawn to it, then cut on our machines to those exact sizes. Nothing was trimmed to fit on the day.
The rangehood canopy is clad in the same Prime Oak and follows the same line, so the extraction disappears into the joinery instead of sitting on the wall as an appliance. If you have a period house in the north-west with a raked or a stepped ceiling, this is the part worth getting right, and it is the same problem we solved differently on our Ascot Vale renovation.
A raked ceiling is the most common reason a kitchen gets built short.
The standard answer is a bulkhead: stop the cabinets at a level height, plaster over the wedge of space above them, and never mention it. It is quicker to draw and quicker to fit.
It also throws away the top third of the wall in a room that has no island and no walk-in pantry to fall back on. Height was the only storage this galley had left to give, so we took it.
The peninsula is the one piece in the room that people touch first and look at longest, so it carries the heaviest stone detail in the kitchen.
Both ends of the peninsula are mitred waterfalls. A mitre is two pieces of stone cut at forty-five degrees and joined so the seam vanishes into the corner, which lets a slab read as one solid block folded over the edge and down to the floor.
Get it wrong and you see a dark line at the corner and the veining jumps. Get it right and the gold vein runs over the edge and keeps going down the leg, which is exactly what it does here.
The same stone returns as a splashback panel set into the window run, so the only thing between the bench and the garden is glass and one piece of stone. There is no tiling and no grout line anywhere in the kitchen.
The whole window wall is drawers. Not a single low cupboard in the run, because a drawer brings its contents out to you and a cupboard makes you kneel down and reach into the dark.
They are deep enough for pots and stacked plates, and because they are on Blum runners they take that weight and still close under a fingertip. In a galley this matters more than usual. You cannot step back very far, so everything has to come to you.
The tall cabinetry at the other end carries the pantry and the appliance storage and swallows the fridge into the run, so the galley reads as two clean walls rather than a row of separate objects. Same thinking as the pantry storage we fit as standard.
The tall run finishes hard against the raked ceiling on its angled cut. Above the fridge, in the corner, and along the top of the pantry, the cabinetry keeps going where a standard kitchen would stop and plaster over the gap.
That recovered space is not a gimmick. In a galley there is no island to absorb overflow and no walk-in pantry to hide it, so the height is the only storage the room has left to give. It is the same reason we take built-in wardrobes to the ceiling rather than leaving a shelf on top.
The structural side of this job — the propping, the framing and the making good — was handled by our sister company KRenovation, who have written up the build side of the same house. If your kitchen needs walls or windows moved before the joinery goes in, one call covers both.
Four stages, all of them ours. Nobody subcontracts the cabinetry out and nothing turns up flat-packed from a supplier.
We measure the room as it actually is, angles and all, then draw the kitchen to those measurements and give you a fixed itemised price before anything is cut.
Panels are cut to size and edged on our own machines. On a job like this every diagonal is a different length, so the sizes come off the drawing, not off a tape on site.
Cabinets are assembled in the factory at Ravenhall, checked square and hung with their Blum hardware before they ever leave the building.
Our crew fits it and scribes the panels into the ceiling angle. The stonemason templates only once the boxes are standing, and the rubbish leaves with us.
Licensed trades cover the electrical and the plumbing. Where a job touches structure, an engineer specifies it and a permit covers it. Our joinery workmanship is warranted for ten years, and the stone and the Blum hardware each carry their maker's own cover.
Yes, and it is worth doing rather than bulkheading over it. The cabinets are drawn to the actual pitch measured on site, every angled panel is cut to its own length in the factory, and the tops are scribed to the ceiling on install. The alternative is stopping the run at a level height and losing the top third of the wall.
No, and it is worth being clear about that. Prime Oak is a decorative surface with an oak grain, and in Absolute Wood Matt the texture is pressed in register with the print so it reads and feels like timber. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood. Veneer is beautiful but it moves, marks and needs sealing. In a working family kitchen a matt woodgrain like this stays looking the same for far longer, which is why it was specified here.
Two pieces of stone cut at forty-five degrees and joined at the corner so the seam disappears and the slab reads as one solid piece folding over the end. It costs more than a square butt join because the stonemason has to match the veining across the cut, but it is the difference between a benchtop that looks applied and one that looks solid.

It depends on the run length, the stone, and whether anything structural has to move first. Publishing a single figure would mislead more people than it would help. Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale, Aberfeldie, Niddrie, Strathmore, Essendon North, Airport West, Keilor East and Pascoe Vale, all served out of the Ravenhall factory. Plenty of these houses take a laundry or a study fit-out at the same time, and running them together saves a second install.
Essendon sits in Moonee Valley, a straight run from our Ravenhall factory down the Calder. It is one of the areas we work in most, along with the older brick and weatherboard homes through Ascot Vale and Moonee Ponds where raked and stepped ceilings turn up constantly.
